Nicholas Flat Trail is a key piece of the Nicholas Flat Trails Network. The trail connects the Pacific Ocean to the hills overlooking Malibu with views of the Santa Monica Mountains. Traveling from the ocean, expect a steady climb up to the ridgeline. For a loop with less climbing connect with Willow Creek Trail. Numerous trails spur off Nicholas Flat Trails higher up the hill for loops though Nicholas Flat Nature Preserve.

From the PCH, use the Leo Carrillo State Park entry near Mulholland Hwy. to access the southern end of the trail; there is limited parking at the north end of the trail, accessed by taking the PCH to Decker Road then left on Decker School Road. Continue on road until end; there is one ADA parking space at trailhead and limited street parking.
