This segment of the Backbone Trail descends into densely wooded Latigo Canyon and then climbs up to Newton Motorway, where the Backbone Trail system continues into upper Solstice Canyon. Just east of the Latigo Trailhead is a steep rocky hillside with narrow trail tread; be careful and pass safely. West from the trailhead, the trail dives through upper Newton Canyon, crossing the land bridge over Kanan Dume Road, Tunnel 1, to get to the Kanan Backbone Trail Trailhead.

This segment can be accessed from the trailhead on Latigo Canyon Road, approximately 7.2 miles north of the PCH. The Backbone Trail continues in both directions. There is no public access to the eastern end from public roads.
