Upper Encina Trail is a short trail which connects to the Backbone - Dead Horse Trail. The Backbone - Dead Horse trail is in the eastern section of the Backbone Trail System, located in Topanga State Park. It provides for a variety of experiences from rolling grasslands to coastal chaparral and oak woodlands. There is a small parking area at the western end of the trail but the eastern end can be accessed from Trippet Ranch via Musch Trail which has a larger parking area and includes a ranger station and visitor center with restrooms and picnic tables.

From the PCH, travel north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. Turn right on Entrada Rd. Keep left until you reach the park’s main parking lot. From the 101, exit at Topanga Canyon Blvd, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed to Entrada Rd. Turn left into the park’s main parking lot.
