The 2016 Sand Fire burned portions of the trail and the subsequent rains in early 2017 overflowed Placerita Creek resulting in damage to portions of the Canyon Trail and silt and debris eroding from the upper canyon. Following the damage caused to the portions of the Canyon Trail, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (LACDPR) and the United States Forest Service (USFS) closed
public access to the trail as a safety precaution.
