This segment of the Backbone Trail travels along the south-ridge of the canyon, with views out to the Pacific Ocean at higher points. The segment drops down into the canyon follows the low valley until climbing up on either end. The grade is more gradual on the eastern end with the steepest areas near the western access point. The majority of the segment passes through chaparral vegetation with woodlands in the valley.
From PCH, travel 5 miles on Corral Canyon Road. Slight left onto Castro Peak Motorway. Travel 5 miles on Corral Canyon Road to the dead end at Corral Canyon Trailhead. The last 0.4 miles are unpaved.
